Crash Type   Motorist turned left into passing bicyclist
Countermeasure   Advanced Stop Line or Bike Box

A handful of communities in the United States have experimented with the use of a bike box or advanced stop line at intersections. The goal of this design is to move cyclists to a "resevoir" ahead of the stopped motor vehicle traffic at an intersection so that they can turn or get into position to turn while the motorists are stopped behind them. This type of intersection design might alleviate some of the left-turn motorist collisions, although it would not affect bicyclists riding through the intersection on a green light. More information on advanced stop lines can be found at http://www.walkinginfo.org/pdf/r&d/bikebox.PDF and experience from the United Kingdom is also available on-line. http://www.roads.detr.gov.uk/roadnetwork/ditm/tal/cycle/05_96/index.htm
