There are not enough bicycling facilities in my community
Whether it is due to traffic volume or speed, lack of a shoulder, or other reasons, many roads are uninviting for bicyclists. The good news is that there are many short-term and long-term options available for incorporating bicycle facilities into your community.
Several resources are useful for addressing the need for more facilities:
- Understanding bicycle facilities
- Advocating for bicycle facilities
- Planning for bicycles
- Funding bicycle improvements
The following should be considered when supporting the construction of new bicycle facilities:
- Be patient: It may take some time to get bicycle facilities installed in your community. Even small improvements can progress slowly through the review, design, and implementation phases.
- Build support within your neighborhood: Your elected officials will be more willing and likely to support bicycle facility improvements that have wide support from the community. Homeowners associations or a school PTA can often be a formidable and persuasive ally.
