Millions
of Americans ride bicycles for recreation and exercise. Some commute
to work or school by bicycle. For others, bicycling and walking are
the only means of transportation available. Yet our cities are planned
and built to accommodate cars, not people. Homes, schools, stores,
and offices are separated. Many roads have narrow lanes and carry
high volumes of high-speed traffic. Not surprisingly, people often
believe that they can't "get there from here" by bicycling. Fortunately,
many options for improving the bicycling environment are available
to planners and engineers.
